Since it was
established with
registration in
the NGO Board of
the Ministry of
Internal Affairs,
Uganda in April
2007 and later in
Kampala City Authorities
as a Non-profit
& Non-Governmental
Organization, Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services has not
only provided many
charitable medical
services but also
supported the materials
in urgent need or
the necessities
of life for the
needy people and
community in Uganda,
Hwan Sung Medical
Charity Services
has been performing
many substantial
charitable activities.
The charity
programs so far
implemented by Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services have significantly
brought impact on
the welfare and
health of many disadvantaged
people in Uganda.
It
was October 2007
that 5 poor heart
patients had free
open heart surgery
under the exclusive
sponsorship by Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services. The operations
were successfully
carried out at International
Hospital Kampala
(IHK) with full
funding of USD35,000
by Hwan Sung Medical
Services. This was
also a historical
record which could
substantially contribute
to the breakthrough
of heart operation
in Uganda. Up to
that time, this
was the second open
heart surgery and
the largest scale
in Uganda
6
more poor heart
patients had found
hope to avoid their
fatal destiny at
Hwan Sung Medical
Charity Services
in March 2008. Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services again fully
funded the heart
surgeries of those
6 heart patients
at IHK of which
operation fee was
USD30,000. Hwan
Sung had kept its
promise to help
the poor Ugandans
continuously which
had been committed
by Mr. Sung-Hwan
Kim, the chairman
of Hwan Sung Group
of Companies. The
free heart operations
sponsored by Hwan
Sung represented
a milestone in heart
surgery history
in Uganda. The
sponsorship by Hwan
Sung had not only
given hope to many
poor heart patients
in Uganda who were
desperately waiting
for help to survive
but also made the
operation hospital
to build its medical
capacities more
so that the operation
cost could be reduced.
The lowering of
operation fee is
really meaningful
because it makes
more patients to
be benefited in
future.

The first and
second heart surgeries
under full sponsorship
of Hwan Medical
Charity Services
had been performed
by a specialist
medical team consisted
of a specially invited
doctor from London
and local doctors
and nurses. The
advantage of such
surgeries with the
invited specialist
doctor is both in
terms of cost saving
and training Ugandan
Doctors and introducing
most advanced medical
technology to them,
apart from the obvious
benefit to the patients.
Apart from
the heart surgeries
at IHK, Hwan Sung
also fully sponsored
a heart surgery
at Mulago National
Hospital in December
2007.
During
last one year, Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services has exclusively
and fully sponsored
15 free heart surgeries
of which 5 heart
patients were operated
in October 2007
at international
Hospital Kampala
in Uganda,1 heart
patient was operated
in December 2007
at Uganda Heart
Institute (Mulago
Hospital), 6 other
patients wereoperated
in March 2008 at
International Hospital
Kampala in Uganda
and 3 complicated
heart operation
abroad inApril 2008
at Samsung Medical
Center, South Korea.
Hwan Sung has arranged
and sponsored about
300,000,000.- Ugandan
Shillings (USD179,000)
to help those poor
heart patients.
On April 2008, Mr.
Sung-Hwan Kim, the
chairmanof Hwan
Sung Group of Companies,
himself accompanied
3 complicated heart
patients to South
Korea who cannot
be operated in Uganda
and arranged and
sponsored the surgery
fees and the travel
costs. The patients
were onvery serous
conditions in danger
of live but were
fully recovered
after very successful
operations and now
are enjoying their
normal life in Uganda.
It
is estimated that
there are about
500 heart patients
in Uganda whose
lives are practically
hanging on a thread.
They are desperately
waiting to have
surgery done for
their survival but
can not afford the
cost. Those disadvantaged
patients can find
hope at Hwan Sung
Medical Charity
Services.
Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services has also
taken care of many
other cases like
cataract, cleft
lip, cancer and
some other bad illness.
So far, hundreds
of patients have
been supported and
sponsored. In addition,
the charity has
supported materials
in urgent need or
the necessities
of life for the
needy community
in Uganda. In February
2008, it donated
a mobile clinic
office worth about
34 million Uganda
Shillings to an
Ugandan NGO which
supports the elderly,
the widows and the
orphans
affected by HIV.
All
the beneficiaries
of the free medical
services provided
by Hwan Sung Medical
Charity Services
have been selected
among the poor patients
who registered as
the applicants to
the Charity.
Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services put far
increased budget
for charitable services
in 2008 in order
to expand and develop
its free medical
services. As a project
reflected in this
budget plan, the
Charity will operate
a free mobile clinic
for the rural areas
and upcountry. Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services believes
health is apriority
issue for many rural
Uganda communities.
In response to this
call Hwan Sung Medical
Charity Services
is to set up a free
mobile clinic to
provide free medical
treatments for the
poor people upcountry
and the poor in
marginalized communities
of remote lying
areas. The mobile
clinic will screen
and cure diseases
related to dental,
eye and internaldiseases.
The budget of year
2008 only for this
project is USD370,
000 including the
importation of mobile
bus and operation
costs.
Hwan
Sung Medical Charity
Services will develop
and expand its charitable
medical Services
to help the needy
people continuously.
